The Instance #112 - “We Want A Cereal Pet”

Posted on July 3rd, 2008 by The Instance Podcast

Big News Of The Week

Blizzard Announces Open Beta. Oh And They Had This Little Shindig In France.

We’ve got extended Big News this week, as there are so many things to talk about since the last episode of The Instance, it’s hard to know where to begin. So let’s start with late breaking news:
-Registration For The Limited Beta of Wrath Of The Lich King is now open. Blizzard launched the opt-in page for all you want-to-be beta testers just this afternoon, and we’ve got both the US and European versions here.

The WorldWide Invitational In Paris, France, happened this past weekend. Patrick was there, of course.

We Called It, Sort Of

Just two weeks ago on this show, we talked about Blizzard’s test of an unusual two-factor authentication system in Taiwan, and suggested that they should implement something… anything multi-factor in the U.S. And they have. Blizzard handed them out at the WWI, and then sold their first batch from the online Blizzard store, selling out late yesterday.

WoW Comic Coming To TPB in only 4 weeks

The Walt Simonson / Ludo Lullabi World of Warcraft comic, which is on its’ 9th month in a few days, will be published in graphic novel format by Titan Books on July 30. The cover price will be $19.99, or 4 gallons of gasoline, whichever is worth more. It will contain the first 7 issues of the series.

Rumors And Scuttlebutt

It’s A List Of Rumors

  • Druids may be getting a regular ressurection spell in WotLK
  • Did PaladinSchmaladin get a picture of the Wrath Collector’s Edition box? See for yourself.
  • The most discussed rumor lately has been one that Blizzard might introduce Death Knights to WoW 2.5 before the expansion is released. We discuss pros and cons, and why this is highly unlikely.

Davro from Earthen Ring writes:

Hey guys I’m currently level 67 and once I hit 70 I want to work on getting some gear that will let me begin to raid. For the next month or so I won’t be able to commit the time needed to run instances. Are the PvP rewards good enough for basic raiding gear or should I wait until I have more time and do instances instead of trying to raid?

Nick N. writes:

Hey I was wondering if there is a site you have found that lists daily quests by level requirement cause i have found a few my level (not 70) and really enjoyed them but would like to be able to do a lot more.

Our suggestion here.

Drop Of The Week

You Need Some New Desktop Wallpaper

The venerable European CM Vaneras dropped in yesterday with an unexpected gift - a new and utterly awesome desktop wallpaper file of Illidan The Betrayer, oozing green light and clutching a skull. And there are some naga in there. And you can get it in nine different sizes here.

Big News Of The Week

That Level 30? She’s Got A Ticket To Ride

The incremental patch 2.4.3 hit the WoW public test realms this week with quite a bit of bluster for what appears to be a small patch. Different parts of the WoW community are interested in different aspects of the patch, but one issue seems to unify all - you will now train for mounted travel at level 30, rather than level 40. More:

  • The wildly overpowered Subtlety Rogue talent ‘Cheat Death’ is being brought back to reality.
  • Warlocks’ Curse of Shadow and Curse of Elements will be combined.
  • A bunch of nerfs to the mobs and encounters in Magister’s Terrace.
  • Your flying non-combat pet is getting a little more altitude.
  • They’re trying to fix the help system, streamlining opening tickets.
  • Your Clockwork Rocket Bot is going back to war.
  • The price of Mooncloth is about to drop.
  • Haris Pilton will launch her new line of clothing and jewelry. Not kidding.

Rumors And Scuttlebutt

Epic Gems Prices May Get Cut

According to MMO Champion, the PvP gems that are currently available for large amounts of honor… appear to be selling for 800 Arena Points as well in the forthcoming patch 2.4.3.

I play a lvl 50 fire spec mage and I have just found battlegrounds and I am just wondering what kind of tips you guys have for someone who is just starting out in battlegrounds.

Gintoki from the Thrall realm writes:

I was browsing the official boards and found a topic that someone made about tanking. The title said “Why do you hate tanking?” and the body was “It’s hard on my server to find tanks and I don’t know many people that enjoy tanking. Why the hating?” The CM Bornakk changed the thread title to be “Tanking. Why do you love it?” and the body to “I don’t know many people that like to tank. Why do you love it?”
This thread wasn’t bashing anyone, or anything like that. Bornakk just outright changed the thread to say what he wanted it to say. Do you think this is right? It’s nice that the CM’s try to keep the forums a positive place, but using his editing power to change a thread that didn’t, or shouldn’t, have been changed just because he thought it wasn’t “positive enough” is a little Big Brother-ish.
What do you guys think?

Justin B. writes:

Hey guys. Just a quick question: I would like to know what is the best way I can level up my enchanting skill. I play a level 30 mage, called dorial, on the shattered hand realm.

Big News Of The Week

We Finally Have A Date, Now All We Need Is A Limo

After months of silence, Blizzard has finally set the date for the release of Season 4 in the Arena PvP portion of WoW. On June 24 - that’s 12 days from now - Season 4 starts in all it’s glory. The new gear, called Brutal Gladiator, is coming with a twist - the pieces are not class specific, and for the first time, players running around on the arena floor will not be recognizable by class.

I need to respec my hunter and I remember Scott talking about a build that was recommended to him by a guild member. Can you let me know the exact talent points for that build? Or can you recommend a build for me? I don’t raid yet. I do the daily quests and some grinding, and I am just now starting to do BG’s. Any advice would be appreciated.

Marksman build here.

Teli, 65 Hunter on Malfruion writes:

I’m currently level 65 on my way to 70, and much like Scott I’m sure I will have a lot of greens when I first turn 70. My guild is a small leveling guild, so there’s really no raiding going on. I’ve made some friends online in other guilds but I don’t want to ask to just be run through so I can get better gear. What’s the quickest way to replace my greens with some decent stuff so I don’t look like a total noob when I start to raid/PvP?

I love your show and listen religiously every week. I also try and catch up on back episodes that I missed as I find time. I noticed last week that on iTunes you can only go back to episode #88 and I need to download episodes in the 30’s. I know I can log onto your website and upload each individual mp3 file, but it is much more time conuming than using iTunes. Will this be fixed?

Legislate Some Pwnage

Last week a story surfaced about Jeanne Stevens, a congressional candidate from Connecticut. Jeanne mentioned in a local newspaper that she plays World of Warcraft, and the story circulated throughout the blogosphere. Well, Wandering Goblin managed to get an interview with Jeanne, and it turned out pretty good. It seems Jeanne is truly an MMO-playing gamer, and she’s funny on top of that.

In My Adobe Hacienda, There’s A Touch Of Vulnerability

A critical vulnerability was discovered this week in the popular web-content delivery program Adobe Flash, and it could potentially be used to target World of Warcraft players and accounts. The newest available version of Adobe Flash, version 9.0.124.0, does not contain this vulnerability, and today Blizzard began suggesting that all WoW players upgrade their Flash player as soon as possible by visiting the Adobe.com download page.

Druid Takes Down Onyxia Solo

Didn’t this used to take 40 people? Serennia of the Vanquish guild on the US-Cho’gall realm pulled it off, and has the video to prove it. For those that remember Onyxia very well, the video is heavily edited. Phase 2 lasted 52 minutes for this guy.

The latest podcast talks about the the leaked information of WOTLK and we were given the warnings about posting, sharing, etc.. As I recall, the case was made in which this information was pretty much stolen.. aka a breach of contract..right? Did you guys give in and look up the information and satisfy your curiosity anyway?

Heejin from Lightninghoof writes:

You guys have a really great show with a lot of awesome info. My only complaint (which I’m sure you have heard before and will not change) is your bias towards the horde faction. I don’t mind hearing about it every now and then but it seems throughout the majority of the show there is some kind of alliance (usually gnome, which i’m not a fan of myself, but they are my faction!) bashing. I’ve done my fair share of horde bashing but honestly after hearing it over and over in your show I’m not sure if I will be tuning in again.

That Random Mount Macro

Last week on The Instance, Randydeluxe mentioned that he uses a macro that chooses one of the mounts in his bag randomly as he mounts up. The result was a flood of mail questioning the existance of this macro. So here we present it in all its’ glory, with a tip of the hat to WoWwiki.com, and specifically the editor who added it to the ‘useful macros’ article in the first place. That’s where Randy got it:

/dismount
/userandom Horn of the Swift Timber Wolf,Swift Brewfest Ram,Swift Purple Hawkstrider,Whistle of the Black War Raptor,Black War Kodo

See how that works? Just replace Randy’s mount’s names with yours.
